American Idol alum Katharine McPhee has joined the cast of the highly anticipated NBC pilot Smash, according to The Hollywood Reporter
The pilot, from Dreamworks, is based on an idea by Steven Spielberg and follows an ensemble of characters who come together to put on a Marilyn Monroe musical on Broadway led by the musical’s composer Tom and lyricist Julia (Debra Messing).
Joining McPhee on “Smash” are Jack Davenport, Debra Messing and Megan Hilty. The first two are cast as choreographer and lyricist respectively while Hilty’s role is as another actress. MCPhee, who released her self-titled debut album back in 2007, made a TV pilot for a new comedy series called ‘The Pink House’ last year.
It’s yet to be announced what character McPhee will play, but she was sporting some Monroe-esque hair during her “Unbroken” album release.
She’ll next be seen in the currently-titled “Untitled 3D Shark Thriller,” which opens later this year, and the romantic comedy “You May Not Kiss the Bride.”
