It's the end of an era for Martin Scorsese. After being an advocate of shooting on film for decades, it seems as though he's given up the fight.
This is all according to his longtime editor, Thelma Schoonmaker. She was recently interviewed by Empire Magazine, and said that Scorsese is shooting his upcoming flick, "The Wolf of Wall Street," digitally in 2D instead of on film.
"It would appear that we've lost the battle," she said. "I think Marty just feels it's unfortunately over, and there's been no bigger champion of film than him."
For those of you who haven't been keeping up on the film, "The Wolf of Wall Street" follows a drug-, sex- and alcohol-addicted brokerage firm operator's rise from a 20-something multi-millionaire in the 1980s to a 30-something federal convict banned from the securities business for life in 1994. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Kyle Chandler, Jonah Hill, Jean Dujardin and Margot Robbie. This will be Scorsese and DiCaprio's fifth film together.
It is sad to hear that he seems to have given up on film as a medium and is open to exploring the process of shooting digitally. It will make creating 3D movies easier for him in the future, but also sacrifices something from the old school nature of his movies. Schoomaker echoed the same sentiments in her interview.
"It's a very bittersweet thing to be watching films with him now that are on film. We're cherishing every moment of it," she said. "The number of prints that are now being made for release has just gone down, and it would appear that the theatres have converted so quickly to digital."
"The Wolf of Wall Street" is due out next year.
