Clad in an inch-high white minidress, her (likely bloodshot) eyes shielded by stylish Jackie O shades, Lindsay Lohan entered a plea of not guilty to one count of felony grand theft in the disappearance of a $2,500 necklace during an arraignment hearing in Los Angeles court on Wednesday afternoon.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office filed charges against the actress this week, after she allegedly worked out of a Venice, California jewelry store last month wearing a necklace that she never paid for. Lindsay, who was later photographed wearing the bauble, says the item was a gift.
Bail was set at $40,000, paving the way for Lohan’s release, but Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz said it appeared Lohan had violated her ongoing probation on a four year old DUI charge and had some stern words of warning for the repeat rehabber, 24:
“Let me just tell you a couple things so we have no misunderstandings… You’re in a different situation now that a felony’s been filed against you,” Judge Schwartz said. “You now have a pending felony case, so in the interim while this case is percolating… if you violate the law, I will remand you and set no bail and your attorney won’t be successful this time. Everyone in this room has to follow the law… you’re no different than anyone else, so please don’t push your luck, because I’m telling you… things will be different…”
If convicted, Lohan could face up to three years in a California state prison. Her next probation hearing is set for Feb. 22.
