Ashlee Simpson Files for Divorce, Seeks Spousal Support

Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz' 2½-year long marriage has ended with Ashlee filing for divorce on Tuesday, February 8, citing irreconcilable differences.

Ashlee's rep confirmed to PEOPLE.

"After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce," the couple issued a statement through a spokesperson. "We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our No. 1 priority. We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives."

Ashlee's big decision to file for a divorce has surprised many and for now its a wait and watch thing for the young couple's fans.

TMZ has reported that the couple signed the divorce documents on Monday, February 7.

Early on Monday, Wentz, who was in Dallas alone for the Superbowl Sunday, wrote on his twitter account:

"dont forget 2 notice-when i look into the lil dudes eyes & smile, the way he loves. i realize @ashsimpsonwentz is a good moma + so much more"

In the court papers Ashlee, 26, is seeking primary physical custody of their 2-year-old son, Bronx Mowgli Wentz, with visitation for Wentz, spousal support and seeking to go back to her birth name of Simpson and drop "Wentz."

TMZ sources have told that Pete wants joint legal and physical custody of their son.

Ashlee and Wentz' separation date is yet to be determined in the court but in January the couple seems to spent lots of time apart.

On January 19 Ashlee wrote on her Twitter:

"@petewentz I already miss your handsome face!"

Simpson and Wentz, 31, were initially seen together in 2006. They announced their engagement in April 2008 and got married on May 17. Ashlee was already pregnant with their son Bronx who was born in November. The wedding was officiated by Simpson's father, Joe Simpson. Ashlee changed her named to Ashlee Simpson-Wentz soon after the wedding.

Following their marriage, Ashlee put her singing and acting career on hold to become a full time mom and wife, whereas Pete continued to tour and work relentlessly on his music career. But they both made great parents as the two were often seen on family outings.
